As a result of examining the relationship between this earthquake and a Nankai Trough earthquake, it is believed that the possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring in the expected focal area of a Nankai Trough earthquake is relatively higher than usual.

At approximately 4:43 pm today (8th), a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred with its epicenter at Hyuga Sea.
Seismic activity has remained high since then.
In addition, step-like changes associated with this earthquake have been observed at strain observation points.
The Japan Meteorological Agency held an emergency evaluation committee on earthquakes along the Nankai Trough and examined the relationship between this earthquake and the Nankai Trough earthquake.
This earthquake was a reverse fault type with a pressure axis running in the west-northwest and east-southeast direction, and was assessed to have a moment magnitude of 7.0, caused by a shift in part of the boundary between the land plate and the Philippine Sea plate within the expected focal region of the Nankai Trough earthquake.
According to statistical data on past large earthquakes around the world, of the 1,437 earthquakes with a moment magnitude of 7.0 or greater that occurred between 1904 and 2014, there were six cases of subsequent earthquakes with a moment magnitude of 8 or greater occurring in the same area within seven days of the initial earthquake, and the frequency of subsequent occurrences decreases over time.
This data includes a case where a moment magnitude 7 class earthquake occurred two days before the 2011 (Heisei 23) Tohoku region Pacific Ocean offshore earthquake (moment magnitude 9.0) occurred.
Looking at examples from around the world, the frequency with which an earthquake of moment magnitude 8 or higher occurs within seven days in the same area after an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.0 or higher is about once in several hundred.
For these reasons, it is believed that the possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring in the expected focal region of the Nankai Trough earthquake is relatively higher than usual.
Nankai Trough earthquakes are diverse, and if a large earthquake occurs, the epicenter may be limited to the area surrounding this earthquake, or it may extend to the entire region of Nankai Trough.
If the largest earthquake were to occur, strong shaking would be felt over a wide area from Kanto region to Kyushu Region, and a large tsunami is expected in the area from Kanto region to Okinawa Region, Pacific Coast.

本日（８日）１６時４３分頃に日向灘を震源とするマグニチュード７．１の地震が発生しました。この地震と南海トラフ地震との関連性について検討した結果、南海トラフ地震の想定震源域では、大規模地震の発生可能性が平常時に比べて相対的に高まっていると考えられます。今後の政府や自治体などからの呼びかけ等に応じた防災対応をとってください。

本日（８日）１６時４３分頃に日向灘を震源とするマグニチュード７．１の地震が発生しました。その後の地震活動は活発な状態が続いています。また、ひずみ観測点では、この地震に伴うステップ状の変化が観測されています。
気象庁では、南海トラフ沿いの地震に関する評価検討会を臨時に開催し、この地震と南海トラフ地震との関連性について検討しました。
この地震は、西北西・東南東方向に圧力軸をもつ逆断層型で、南海トラフ地震の想定震源域内における陸のプレートとフィリピン海プレートの境界の一部がずれ動いたことにより発生したモーメントマグニチュード７．０の地震と評価されました。
過去の世界の大規模地震の統計データでは、１９０４年から２０１４年に発生したモーメントマグニチュード７．０以上の地震１，４３７事例のうち、その後同じ領域でモーメントマグニチュード８クラス以上の地震が発生した事例は、最初の地震の発生から７日以内に６事例であり、その後の発生頻度は時間とともに減少します。このデータには、平成２３年（２０１１年）東北地方太平洋沖地震（モーメントマグニチュード９．０）が発生した２日前に、モーメントマグニチュード７クラスの地震が発生していた事例が含まれます。世界の事例ではモーメントマグニチュード７．０以上の地震発生後に同じ領域で、モーメントマグニチュード８クラス以上の地震が７日以内に発生する頻度は数百回に１回程度となります。
これらのことから、南海トラフ地震の想定震源域では、大規模地震の発生可能性が平常時に比べて相対的に高まっていると考えられます。
南海トラフ地震には多様性があり、大規模地震が発生した場合の震源域は、今回の地震の周辺だけにとどまる場合もあれば、南海トラフ全域に及ぶ場合も考えられます。
最大規模の地震が発生した場合、関東地方から九州地方にかけての広い範囲で強い揺れが、また、関東地方から沖縄地方にかけての太平洋沿岸で高い津波が想定されています。
今後の政府や自治体などからの呼びかけ等に応じた防災対応をとってください。
気象庁では、引き続き注意深く南海トラフ沿いの地殻活動の推移を監視します。
